Woodworking is an art that has advanced through the years with innovative technology right alongside of other fascinating areas of art. However, in this beautiful art field there will never be a machine or electronic device developed that will completely take the craft out of our hands. The most basic definition of woodworking is the process of carving, making or building something using wood. One of the first materials known to human beings is wood and it has been reported that civilization developments can be closely tied and measured to the increasing skills developed in working wood materials. From the early finds of hunting gear and wooden tools, through ancient civilizations where wooden furniture, better tools and weapons crafted from wood brought us through the ages to today where there is woodworking involved in everything around us.
Wood can be categorized in three primary groups: from broadleaf trees with tight grains are hardwoods, from coniferous trees come softwoods and wood materials that are man-made such as medium-density fiberboard and plywood. Commonly you will find hardwoods used in construction and furniture applications, softwoods are typically used in millwork, furniture and the raw pulp materials for paper products. The man-made woods which are usually cheaper to use are found everywhere from house walls to boxes and packages.
The craft of woodworking is a very wide ranging field and can cover just about anything made out of wood materials from the ordinary bar stool to the very intricately hand-carved wooden statue, furniture piece or finely crafted musical instrument selling for thousands of dollars. Additionally, woodworking has no limits, boundaries, prejudices or specific parameters attached to it. People of every age, race, creed and social status including children and the elderly enjoy it. It is a hobby for many, a way to relax for others and the livelihood for thousands. It has been used for decades as a way to spend quality time with family, friends and peers. Mentors have been using the woodworking craft to teach, bond, mold and develop young minds into great adults since before a father and his son built the first soapbox car behind the barn.
For the person interested in this wide ranging field, the areas of study is just as diverse from the how-to-build article in a magazine or book to the specialized study courses in colleges. As well there are other areas directing involved with the woodworking field such as plan designs, project management and many others.
The appeal of woodworking is the same for the novice as it is for the master craftsman, regardless if you are spending hours whittling down a tree branch into a toy bow and arrow for your grandson or in a fancy woodshop using the most advanced lathe and router developed. The pride and pure joy you can experience through the completion of any project you were personally involved with is a wonderful feeling and the crooked or uneven dog and birdhouses seen in yards across the nation is all the proof you need.
