How to keep my cat's eyes clean?

I have a 3 month old exotic kitten. He has the flat little face with the big eyes that pop out. I have had him for about a week. I have noticed that his eyes water a lot. I also noticed a brown discharge coming from his eyes. What is this brown discharge? How do I better care for his eyes? I bought some kitten eye wipes that I use on his eyes. Also recently I have noticed one of his eyes is always closed more than the other (it also waters more). Could it be infected? Links to websites would be nice. Thanks.

I treat my cats' eyes like I would a human.

In case there was infection, I'll take a cotton ball and soak it in hot water (not scalding hot, mind you). I'll use that to wipe the gunk out of the corners, and if the cat allows, will try to sponge the corner of his eye with the hot cotton ball. This helps with any bacteria that might be in there. Also a good treatment for pink eye if you ever get it.

Then I use the most basic eye drop lubricator I can find at the store. Make sure you don't use contact cleaner, just an eye lubricant. the pet store sells the same exact thing for 5 times the price, but human's eyes and cat's eyes aren't all that different. Getting the eye drops in the right place is hard if your cat is fidgety, so I soak a Q-tip and gently wipe the corner near the tear gland. Do this as needed, once or twice a day, and you should see a difference in a matter of days.
