Exotic Moluccan

what do the numbers mean on the metal band on my cockatoo's leg?

He is a Moluccan cockatoo, approximately 25 years old. We adopted him and he has a metal band on his leg that says "OMC 871." The vet said that probably he is an import and that exotic birds were supposed to be not imported after 1992 (I think that is the year). Does anyone know what the letters and numbers mean?

As everyone else has already said: the band is nothing more than an ID tag. However, as an owner of a number of cockatoos, I recommend you keep an eye on the little band. While it doesn't happen too frequently, as the bird grows the band can become tight on their foot/leg. This can obviously cause discomfort for your little (well - as a Moluccan he's not that little) friend. I have seen this happen twice. Luckily the solution is quite easy - the vet can painlessly cut the band off. And may I add - how wonderful that you adopted a bird in need of a good home... :-)
