I need a reasonably priced but dependable gas chain saw?

I have many trees on my property ( 3"-18") dia. I need a dependable yet not over priced gas chain saw to clear some trees for better tree growth. I have almost no experience with a chain saw and have read reviews on several brands, but it is so confusing trying to pick one. I am looking for ease of use, easy starting and maintenance. Either a 14"or 16" preferred Any Paul Bunyan's out there have a favorite saw?

I have a Poulan, 43cc with 18" bar and it does a good job for me. I cut a lot of trees on my property and use it quite often. I got mine used from someone for about $50, but you can buy one new for around $150, I think.

Where can I get wood logs in the Oswego,illinois area for lath turning?

I need wood for woodturning on my lathe for making bowls.

Open your phone book and call a few licensed tree companies. Tree companies that do not keep the wood for future split wood sales either have to pay to dispose of the wood at a recycle plant or have to chip the logs. If you are able to make any connections, make it easy for them ie. go to the job site and get the wood. you can easily find great wood to turn. Just as a note. buy some green wood end sealer wax (rockler wood store sells some) and wax your log ends asap. You will get more bang for your effort with reduced checking (splitting) and of course more log with turnable material.

Pool Table Construction: Hardwoods Vs Mdf

Prior to the introduction of MDF into the industry, pool tables (as well as snooker tables and billiards tables) had always been made from hardwoods.

The term ‘hardwood’ designates trees usually from the deciduous family, and typically broadleaved. As the name suggests the wood from these trees is harder and more durable than that from their softwood relations.

The most common hardwoods used in the construction of pool tables are mahogany, oak, birch and rosewood. The durability of these woods makes them ideal for holding the weight of a slate playing surface, without the risk of warping over time. Not only are these woods extremely hard wearing but the grain and finish of the wood adds to the character of the finished pool table.

Mahogany was particularly prevalent in the pool and snooker industry up until the early 19th century. When polished it displays a deep red brown finish which darkens over time, and straight grain. While it is still regarded as one of the best choices for larger pool tables, intensive deforestation has increased the cost immensely. The same is true to a lesser extent of other hardwoods, and this has led to the introduction of MDF as a cheaper alternative.

The introduction of MDF to the pool table industry created a wealth of cheaper, less durable models which, for the first time, made pool tables affordable to almost anybody. The main reason for the introduction of cheaper, smaller pool tables was for the domestic consumer market. These tables are not hand crafted/finished as their predecessors were, but machine made.

The main benefit of the wider availability of pool tables, which had once been the privilege of the very wealthy, was that the game of pool was brought to a much wider audience. Whereas before you had to join a club, or be old enough to go to a pub to play, people could now enjoy the game in their own home.

The major disadvantages of using a cheaper, manmade composite like MDF are that it is not as durable as a natural hardwood, and must more susceptible to variations in humidity and temperature. In order to maintain the appearance of a ‘real’ pool table, these MDF bed tables are usually finished with a wood effect veneer (typically of mahogany, rosewood or oak) and domestic quality cloth/rubber.

The use of MDF has also extended to some slate bed pool tables. In a similar fashion to MDF only pool tables, the cabinet and legs of the table are finished in re-enforced MDF. A wood effect veneer is then applied to the MDF to finish the pool table off. The two main benefits of finishing a pool table like this are:

Kitchen Cabinets- Selecting the Right Type of Wood

When you start shopping for kitchen cabinets, the type of wood used is just as important as the overall look or finish of the cabinets. Depending on whether you are buying RTA (ready-to-assemble), stock, semi-custom, or custom cabinets will have a big impact on the types of woods that are available for you to select from. Custom cabinets will offer the largest selections of wood types, but you will also pay significantly more for them. Here is a list of wood types that you may come across in your search for kitchen cabinets (listed in order of price)

Paint Grade

Paint Grade wood can really consist of a wide range of wood types. Most stock and semi-custom cabinet companies that apply a painted finish may even use MDF or Particleboard instead of wood. The most common paint grade woods will be Birch, Poplar, or Maple.

Oak

Oak is probably the most widely used wood for cabinets. Most contractor grade cabinets, and more economically priced cabinets will be made of Oak. Oak is available in over 200 different species and is grown all around the world. The most common finish for Oak cabinets is just a natural or honey finish. Oak is a strong, dense wood that will hold up to everyday use and can accept stain well.

Pine

Pine comes in three different versions- white, yellow, or ponderosa. White pine can be very easy to work with and will accept stain easily, while ponderosa will require some special attention because of the resin that may still be concentrated in the wood. Pine is great for creating a rustic feel for your home.

Maple

Maple is another widely used wood type and can be found in a wide variety of species. This is probably the most common wood found in RTA Cabinets, because it is grows abundantly in Northern China and most RTA cabinets come from China. There are also more than 10 species of Maple that come out of the US, so there is a wide variety of grains. Most maple is very easy to work with and will accept stain easily. Maple finishes well in any color- from a Honey Finish to a Chestnut Glaze.

Cherry

Cherry is typically used in the mid-priced to higher end cabinets. The unique feature about Cherry is that with a light stain applied, it will actually get darker with time. As the wood ages and is exposed to sunlight, it will change to the reddish brown color most people associate with antique cherry furniture.

Bamboo

With the push towards becoming eco-friendly, more and more cabinets are being designed using Bamboo. Bamboo is a hearty plant that grows rapidly. The biggest drawback to bamboo is that it has to be veneered over another wood, since Bamboo plants do not grow thick enough to cut into planks. Right now, you will only find Bamboo being used by custom shops primarily on the West Coast

Mahogany

Mahogany creates a very rich look, and the wood itself is reddish-brown. Aside from exotic woods, this is going to be one of the most expensive options in the common wood types. Mahogany accepts stain very well, but is not an overly strong wood.

Whether you are building a high end kitchen, or just updating a rental unit, there are a wide variety of wood types to select from. Selecting a wood type that will hold up to the amount of use and abuse it will incurr is just as important as how the finished product will look, so keep that in mind when shopping for kitchen cabinets.

Easiest way to joint/plane rough cut red oak lumber?

I just recently got into woodworking and have been doing well with pine. I found a good deal on rough cut red oak boards, so I couldn't pass on it. The widths are mostly 5 1/2" and lengths are 9'. Couldn't I take several of the boards, stand them on ends, and run the edges into a planer to get a uniformed joint? That would eliminate the need for a "jointer" tool.please send me some opinions, I'd like to get my oak started, but the tools are what is holding me back. Tell me what to BUY! Less than $300 please. buy a nice straight 1x8 from the lumber yard it can be any specie's of wood just has to be straight and as long or longer than your oak, temporarily sandwich your oaks to the other board so that the .straightest edge is hanging over the least amount you can. then you can ether run a router with a flush trim bit down it to clean up one good edge, or run it thru your table saw . once you have one good edge its a lot easier to clean up the rest of the board. as far as cleaning the flat of the board in the rough start with the con-caved flat down run thru till its cleaned up that side then switch to the other.

The Lumber Chain of Value - Making Money with Your Portable Sawmill

We have all heard of the food chain. In the world of sawing logs into lumber there is a chain of sales. In this chain we have green lumber sales that include many things such as pallet lumber, crossties, hardwood flooring, grade lumber, etc. Then we have dry lumber sales to include framing and milled products such as flooring, moldings, and furniture both finished and unfinished. Finally, we have houses being built which use some of everything.
The point here is to get the small mill operator to think a little differently. We all love to saw logs but most importantly we need to make money. As I place positions and values on the top and bottom of the chain, remember that I am only giving an opinion and you may have a different one. I merely want to help us think a little larger so we may improve our incomes.
When we saw green lumber and then sell it green we have the least potential of making the most profit. Although when we sell it dry to a manufacturer we move up the chain a little higher. But it's when we produce a product from our lumber that we have sawn and dried that we move much further up that chain getting us closer to the top and we all want what is at the top! To re-emphasize the point: when we sell our lumber green we don't reach the true potential that the lumber is capable of producing.
So the idea is to take your sawn lumber and get as much profit from it as is possible. Here are some examples of what I mean:
Example: Green Hardwood Flooring
1) Green hardwood flooring lumber can bring roughly $0.50 per foot.
2) Take that green hardwood flooring lumber, kiln dry it and mill it into flooring and now it brings $1.80 per foot
3) Now take that milled flooring installed and finished in a house for $8.00-$10.00 per ft.!
Wow! That's a big difference going from $0.50 per ft. to $8.00 per ft. A total increase of 1,600%! Try doing that in the stock market! And you can do this every day.
Example: Grade Red Oak
1) FAS is selling for $1.00 per ft green and $2.00 per ft dried to a Cabinet Shop
2) When it's made into cabinets it brings $10.00 per ft.
Again, the increase is substantial at no less than 500%
Example: Pine Framing Lumber
1) Green it brings $0.30 per ft and $0.45 kiln dried
2) Frame a house with it and you'll get $1.50 per ft.
So what could you do that would include all of the finished products that I mentioned? The answer is, build a house. That's right, build houses. Sure it requires you to learn things that you might not know at present, but you can learn to do every process. There are books and DVD's available to teach you every process to complete a house. Every time you put labor into building a house you get top dollar, for every stick of wood that you use in a house you get top dollar. Just remember, it's like everything else in life; you simply do one step at a time.
Have you ever passed by a house and upon seeing the price say to yourself "That house is not worth that much money" yet they sell everyday regardless. You can sell things that bring more money than you might think they are worth when you participate in the house building market.
Think about this, if you know 10 building contractors and you give them your best sales pitch to use your lumber, the laws of sales averages says that 1 or 2 will use some of your lumber and the others will purchase somewhere else. But if you are the house builder you're going to use all your own lumber which will include that flooring, those cabinets, and that framing lumber we talked about earlier. Now we're talking about making some real money ~ getting to the top of that chain.
Now you may be thinking of all the things you might need to make this happen. Firstly if you don't have a sawmill then obviously we can help you with that. Secondly, you might be thinking you need a big planer to make framing for the houses. Well, no need for a planer. Our edger makes that job simple since it uses straight running wide belts with inline moveable guides to create straight lumber with accurate width dimensions. Saw the lumber 2" thick and as wide as possible, stack and dry to 19%, then run them through the edger for the dimensions you desire. The lumber will be better than anything you could purchase from a building material supplier. See there, I've already given you already have your first competitive advantage over the competition~Superior Framing Lumber. That sells houses!
I will leave you with some points of advice from my experience:
1) Let a woman decide which wood and colors to stain in all rooms because you will be selling to a woman. Wood is not like sheet rock where you can change the color at anytime with some paint.
2) Remember to know and to follow all building codes as this is important to the banks
3) When you have someone interested in buying the house the bank will order an appraisal and another competitive advantage you will have over the competition is that your houses (because of the lumber and flooring) will typically appraise for top dollar. This is important when people are in need of the bank to finance most of the amount of the house and most banks are only loaning 80% of the appraised home value. So if you are selling it for say $200,000 and the bank appraises that house for $230,000 then the bank will lend on 80% of $230k. Another ‘Competitive Advantage'.
Even if the market is suppressed as it is today, it is better to have a finished product for sale than a raw product in a suppressed market. Now is the time to prepare for the upcoming improving markets. Just take one step at a time.
You might even start with something simple like a portable storage building or bunk beds, maybe even stands for aquariums. Work it around things you like and can do. Before you know it you will have grown into larger projects and a wider variety of value added products.
