I want to make a cup on my lathe, but I don't know what piece I should use...?

to hold my block to the lathe securely on only one side..instead of a spur drive center, what is the name of the piece that is large and closes around the block? your help is greatly appreciated...buuutttt, it would be really awesome if you could find me a link to one, as well! thanks!

What to do with my extremely curly hair?

My hair is like REALLY curly and I am sick of wearing it in a bun every day or having to get up early to straighten it. It is so curly that it is like 4 inches longer straight than curly. When it is curly it is like shoulder length. What is something that is easy to do that I can do with my hair???

There is only one thing to do WORK IT. You are blessed with what many people dream of having. Although that doesn't mean you cant play it up! Straightening that Mane of Curly Hair

Of course intense heat and steam werenâ€™t the best thing for anyoneâ€™s hair and this normally resulted in hair damage that was hard to fix.

This is no longer the case in this more modern area of hair care. There are products and hair styling tools available today that are able to straighten even the curliest hair without the damage of yesteryears offerings.

If your hair is extremely curly getting it straight will take some time and effort. Itâ€™s not really something you can do if youâ€™re in a hurry but as you get better at it it will take less time. Here are the steps to follow to make the process work the best.

The first step is to shampoo and condition your hair with a deep conditioner to protect against dryness and damage. Use a towel to dry your hair then apply a straightening gel which will prepare your hair for the process. Before firing up the hair dryer let your hair partially air dry.

When youâ€™re ready to start blow drying pin up the top portions of your hair to the top of your head. Using a flat paddle or round brush dry one section of your hair at a time by pulling a small section out straight and drying it. Work it section by section until your hair is totally dry. Now your hair is prepped for the final straightening process.

The styling tool youâ€™ll need for this step is a hair straightening flat iron; preferably a ceramic plated ionic tourmaline type that provides even heat which prevents hair damage. These come in different widths but for the first timer a 1.5 inch model will work well. It gives you better control then larger models and works more hair area then smaller sizes.

A good flat iron will also have multiple temperature settings allowing you to customize the heat needed for your particular hair type. The thicker, coarser, and curlier your hair the higher the temperature will need to be. Of course this doesnâ€™t mean crank it up to its highest setting because you can seriously damage your hair if the heat is too high. Experiment and start with a lower setting and work your way up until you get the results you are looking for.

Remember the most important part to successfully straightening your hair is good preparation. This will give you that smooth, frizz-free hair you desire.

I need peeled log furniture plans, free would be great.?

I'm using dead aspen from my woodlot in South Park, Como, Colorado

"plans" usually refer to making something that you can make again and again... using the same dimensions, because the materials you are using are of a uniform nature.....

Peeled logs are going to be unique... each and every one.... it's going to be pretty hard to find any plans for that type of craft, I would think.

Perhaps a better route, would be to look for websites, or catalogs of others who are making this type of product, for inspiration....and sketch out your own ideas. I would expect each piece of peeled log furniture is going to take some 'tweaking' to make the logs fit together.... making it more of a 'custom' piece of furniture, than something you can build from plans.

Ive run across various pieces of log furniture over the years.. Ive seen beds, chairs, sofas, tables.... all kinds of items. It would be a good idea to perhaps look at plans for standard furniture... such as for a bedframe... to determine what dimensions you would need to meet, for mattresses and such.... Most tables are about 30 inches high.... and most restaurant chairs and booths are about 19" from floor to the seat....

If you are building 'to order'... that is, you have a customer order you are filling... it would be a good idea to build it to fit their size....lol, I have a cousin who is about 5'6"... and I'm about 6'3"...obviously, what will be comfortable for one of us, will not fit the other, lol...

The Price Of Rough Maple Wood?

Hi I am new to lathe work but I am actually getting very good very fast, and I am getting two 5' lengths of a maple tree.

The Maple tree is 16" in diameter by 10' long but we will be cutting it into two 5' lengths

What would the price of this be if I were to sell and/or buy it?

Also for the fellow lathe workers what would I be making approx. for the bowl blanks of this wood? Obviously it would be very hard to calculate because only a few bowl blanks might not crack lol

Your basically selling a log. The market will tell you what its worth. I had a neighbor that had to pay someone to take some logs off his land. These were oak and were diffidently worth some serious money. They were there for many years before the owner paid someone to haul them away.

New Wood vs Older Reclaimed Wood For Projects (Pens/Pencils/Accessories)

When it comes to choosing what type of wood you want your next handcrafted purchase to be, there are several choices for the consumer to think about. Do I want virgin wood, that is, wood that is right from the mill and have never been used previously. It may be cut into sizes for wood workers to deal with such as bowl blanks, pen blanks, spindle blanks, etc. Or, do I want reclaimed wood? Which is wood that has been previously used in furniture, barn siding, flooring, cross beams, etc? This wood is becoming more popular with the green movement and finishes just fine when the top layer of wood is removed.

Wood workers from my discussions are split either way. Some like the finish that virgin wood provides and does not run the rush of embedded nails or other items that might be missed. Others carefully check their reclaimed wood, remove the upper surface and are left with a piece of wood with character. Either through aging or by wear, reclaimed wood use is becoming more popular and demanding a premium at lumber yards across the country.

Personally, there is nothing as beautiful as the fine grain in a piece of Bubinga, Jobillo, Tulipwood or Zebrawood; but a piece of reclaimed Black Walnut has subtle swirls within the grain and a deep color, Beech has lovely grain and dark spots throughout giving fine character and Birch has fine grain and color. The gray ash color of Ash polishes up nicely and shows how the wood has aged. Everyone is looking at the new' greener' woods available with a new eye toward style.

Pen and pencil sets make wonderful gifts, but top it off with a matching letter opener or magnifying glass and the desk set becomes alive with wood tones, no matter what type of desk is in used. One of my personal preferences to turn into pens is not a wood at all. It is Black Palm, which is a palm which exhibits black striations and eyes which resemble the grain in wood. It makes for a fantastic looking pen when finished in a chrome or nickel finish.

I am always experimenting with new types of wood to turn into pens and pencils and continually update my website with ones that provide excellent textures and tones.
