how to set up a project for blood pattern analysis?
I'm doing a project for science fair this year about different viscosity of blood patterns in a crime scence. I was planning on having a set up where something in the place of a human would be hit and blood would be dispelled like it would a human. I have a program that reads fractal patterns that I would also look at. I need ideas on how to set this up? any help would be great, thanks!
Well I’ve never seen a demonstration where an object is struck causing simulated blood to splatter and actually that could be quite tricky with what type of container to use, how to hit it and not cause the liquid to go everywhere including on the crowd you are giving the demonstration to.
For most demos the investigators use a plastic bottle with the sim blood and basically force the liquid out in one rapid movement to show a blood splatter from blunt force trauma from being struck or a gunshot. There are also demos where the blood is just dripped onto a surface as both are used in BPA.
So here is a link on how to create some simulated blood and just use some different types of materials to splatter it on to show the blood patterns and they have to be at least partially porous. Formica and steel etc. it will just run off of the surface. Worst case you could use a squirt gun or create a squirt gun with a plastic soda bottle, drill a nice size but not too large of a hole in the lid, fill it, tape the lid to the bottle and when ready, squeeze it as quickly and as hard as you can to force the liquid to go out as a blood splatter would. Maybe think of a few techniques like that and practice out in the yard (without killing the grass) to see which one works best. Basically I think we want to steer away from striking something as a demo because you never know where your blood is going to actually end up.
